I have loved onion straws my entire life!

When I was younger, I wasn’t a big fan of onions, but onion straws were a different story. I could eat them by the handful!

So of course when I found out about my food allergies, I knew I really wanted to find a replacement.

Around the time of my first Thanksgiving since food allergies, I knew I needed to finally get a recipe figured out so I could have onion straws on my green bean casserole.

You can’t have green bean casserole without onion straws right!?

So I started researching how to make traditional onion straws and it looked really straightforward.

Onions, milk, flour, seasonings, and oil for frying is pretty much all you need.

Instead of regular milk, I decided to use my favorite dairy free milk which is So Delicious Unsweetened Coconut Milk (any dairy free milk should work).

To replace the flour, I decided to try my go to gluten free all purpose flour, Better Batter.

Both substitutes worked magically and just like that, onion straws were back in my life! WOO!

Let’s talk about how you make these super easy gluten free onion straws!

HOW TO MAKE GLUTEN FREE ONION STRAWS:

  1. Prepare Onions: Cut onion into thin rings or strips.  Add gluten free flour to a large bowl.  Mix in salt and pepper.  Add dairy free milk to another large bowl.
  2. Coat Onions in Gluten Free Flour: Dip onions in dairy free milk and then toss in the gluten free flour to evenly coat.
  3. Heat Oil: Heat olive oil on medium-high heat in a large pan.  You will need around 1 1/2 inches of oil in the pan to cover the onions completely when frying.
  4. Fry Onions: Once the oil is hot, add onions to the pan and fry for 4-5 minutes until crispy.  Use a large strainer spoon to remove the onions from the hot oil.  Place onions on a plate with paper towels to soak up any excess oil. Continue this process until all onions are fried.
