This homemade cream cheese frosting has quickly become my absolute FAVORITE frosting to use for my baked treats! I honestly still can’t believe it is vegan and gluten free.

It’s so incredibly easy to make and can be used on so many different desserts. We especially love to have it on cinnamon rolls, carrot cake, fruit pizza, and cinnamon roll cake.

I also love that this frosting takes less than 10 minutes to whip up!

So let’s talk about what you need to make this recipe for gluten free and vegan cream cheese frosting.

GLUTEN FREE VEGAN CREAM CHEESE FROSTING RECIPE INGREDIENTS:

  • 8oz vegan cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup vegan butter, softened (I use “Earth Balance Soy Free Vegan Buttery Sticks”)
  • 3-4 cups vegan powdered sugar (depending on how thick and sweet you want the frosting)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp salt

HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE FOR VEGAN CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:

  1. Beat softened vegan butter and cream cheese in a stand mixer until well blended (or bowl if using a hand-held mixer).
  2. Slowly add in powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt. As you add in the powdered sugar, you will need to stop occasionally to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Beat until creamy.
  3. You can use the frosting right away or place it in the refrigerator to thicken up more.
  4. Store in the refrigerator.
  5. Note: For a thicker frosting that will keep its shape more when piping onto cupcakes, add more powdered sugar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8oz vegan cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup vegan butter, softened (I use “Earth Balance Soy Free Vegan Buttery Sticks”)
  • 34 cups vegan powdered sugar (depending on how thick and sweet you want the frosting*)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

Notes

For a thicker frosting that will keep its shape more when piping onto cupcakes, add more powdered sugar.

Makes about 14oz of frosting (2-3 cups depending on how much powdered sugar you choose to add). This was the perfect amount for frosting 12 cupcakes.

    1. Sorry about that! It is 1/4 cup of vegan butter. I updated the recipe accordingly. Thank you for letting me know I missed that!

  1. What brand of vegan cream cheese would you recommend? I am new to the dairy free world and would love your opinion😁

    1. Hi Kim, my favorite brand of vegan cream cheese is Kite Hill brand. It can get rather expensive though so for recipes like this where the cream cheese will be sweetened quite a bit, I have found that I can use the Daiya brand which is much cheaper.

  2. How much butter?
“1/4 vegan butter, softened (I use “Earth Balance Soy Free Vegan Buttery Sticks”)”
    1/4 stick? 1/4 cup?
    Thanks.

    1. Hi Mary, sorry about that typo! It is 1/4 cup of vegan butter. I updated the recipe to reflect that as well. ☺
