Black bean burgers were one of the first recipes I came across when I started researching gluten free and vegan meals a couple of years ago.  I had heard of frozen black bean burgers that you can buy from the store but they always seemed to get bad reviews.

When I first found out about my food allergies though, I was desperate for meal ideas so I wanted to give homemade black bean a try.

I have to admit I was a black bean burger skeptic, but WOW was I proven wrong!  I could not believe the flavor that came from these burgers!

This burger is also how I fell in love with cilantro.  If I could eat an entire thing of cilantro without my husband thinking I was nuts, I would do it.  I was so excited that one of my first attempts at a gluten free and vegan meal was this amazing!

It really gave me the confidence to look for more recipes that I had never tried before.  Now, I will tell you that this is not a hamburger and it was not meant to be.  I can say however, that hamburgers better watch out because these black bean burgers are one of my new favorites!  They are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and bursting with flavor.

All you have to do is put all of the ingredients in the food processor and blend until a thick paste is formed. Then I put the mixture in the freezer for about 15 minutes to firm up.  If I make the mixture in the morning then I just keep it in the fridge all day until it’s time to cook them for dinner.

When you are ready to cook them in the pan, I find the easiest way to form the patties is to actually use a large ice cream scoop to get the mixture into the pan and then press down gently to form the patties.

What are some recipes that you were a skeptic of and then proven wrong?  I love being proven wrong when the result is as good as these gluten free and vegan black bean burgers.  I can’t wait to hear about them and hope you all love this black bean burger recipe as much as I do!

Black Bean Burgers – Gluten Free & Vegan

  • Author: Morgan | Just What We Eat
  • Prep Time: 15 min
  • Cook Time: 10 min
  • Total Time: 25 min
  • Yield: 4 Servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 15 oz can of black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 3/4 cup of gluten free oats (or gluten free breadcrumbs)
  • 3/4 cup red onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro
  • 2 tbsp chopped green chilies
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 3/4 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 23 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Put all ingredients except for the olive oil in a food processor and blend until a thick paste is formed.
  2. Transfer the mixture to a bowl, cover and freeze for 15-20 minutes (this will help the mixture thicken up so it’s easier to work with).
  3. In a large pan, heat olive oil over medium high heat.
  4. Once the oil is hot, use a large cookie scoop to scoop the mixture into the pan. Gently press down on the scooped mixture to form patties.
  5. Cook the patties on each side for 3-5 minutes each.
  6. Continue cooking on each side until they have darkened and become crispy.
  7. Serve on a bun, in a tortilla, in a salad, over some quinoa, or all by themselves.

To Freeze and Cook Later

  1. Put all ingredients except for the olive oil in a food processor and blend until a thick paste is formed.
  2. Scoop the black bean mixture into a gallon-sized plastic freezer bag and freeze for up to to three months.
  3. When ready to cook, thaw overnight in refrigerator.
  4. Follow cooking directions above.
